Gumbo Jass Band

Introduction

Since its creation in 1998, the traditional jazz band Gumbo Jass Band, formed by six musicians of renowned prestige, has opted to preserve and disseminate the most primitive style of jazz, born at the beginning of the 20th century in the city of New Orleans.

Why 'Gumbo'?

Gumbo is a type of thick soup typical of the city of New Orleans. The base is made with broths and flavors of African origin. It is a dish that is cooked over low heat and that combines different ingredients, such as vegetables, seafood, chicken and spices. This mixture of diverse elements reflects the richness and cultural diversity of the city, as well as the eclectic nature of the jazz that the band interprets.

Why 'Jass'?

Because that's what it was originally called. In popular slang it was related to the sexual act and that is why the press of the time gave it the qualifier of infamous music.
