Introduction
Since its creation in 1998, the traditional jazz band Gumbo Jass Band, formed by six renowned musicians, has aimed to preserve and disseminate the earliest style of jazz, which originated in New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century.
Why 'Gumbo'?
Gumbo is a type of thick soup typical of New Orleans. Its base is made from broths and ingredients with roots in African cuisine. It is a dish cooked slowly over low heat that combines a variety of ingredients, such as vegetables, seafood, chicken and spices. This mixture of elements reflects the richness and cultural diversity of the city, as well as the eclectic nature of the jazz the band plays.
Why 'Jass'?
Because that's what it was originally called. In popular slang it was related to the sexual act and that is why the press of the time gave it the qualifier of infamous music.
